U.S. and Israeli Strikes on Iran Cause Oil Storage Facility Explosion, Toxic Substance Leak Triggers Environmental Disaster
Release time:2026-03-20
Since the U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iran entered their third week, they have not only resulted in casualties and property damage but have also triggered severe environmental disasters. Explosions at oil storage facilities have led to leaks of toxic substances, posing a significant threat to public health and the ecological environment.
According to reports, Israel struck four oil storage facilities and an oil-products transshipment center in Iran, triggering massive plumes of thick smoke and subsequent “black rain” containing petroleum. Streets, vehicles, and vegetation were coated with black deposits, while some residents experienced symptoms such as eye irritation, migraines, and dizziness. An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that the attack resulted in the release of hazardous and toxic substances into the atmosphere, poisoning civilians and causing environmental damage.
The Iranian Red Crescent has warned that toxic hydrocarbons and sulfides released by the explosion at an oil storage facility have entered the atmosphere and cloud formations, potentially causing acid rain that can burn skin and damage lungs. Meanwhile, the leaked crude oil has flowed into drainage systems, contaminating public waterways and further threatening water resource security. Experts note that the environmental and health hazards resulting from this toxic spill will be difficult to mitigate in the short term and could even spread to neighboring countries.
