A Case of Illegal Transportation of Corrosive Substances Investigated in a Certain Area: Wet Storage Batteries Misdeclared as Ordinary Goods Seized

Release time:2026-03-20

During a routine inspection, the maritime authorities in a certain locality uncovered a case of illegal transportation of corrosive substances. The shipper had falsely declared wet storage batteries as ordinary cargo, in serious violation of the relevant regulations on the transport of dangerous goods, and has since been duly sanctioned in accordance with the law.
During an inspection of a container booked under the description “clothing and auto parts,” law enforcement officers discovered square, battery-shaped items inside. Subsequent verification confirmed that the cargo consisted of “wet, non-spillable storage batteries” classified as Class 8 corrosive substances, with UN number UN2800. The shipper had failed to declare the shipment as required and had instead transported it as ordinary cargo without authorization.
According to reports, wet storage batteries contain corrosive chemical liquids inside; if these leak, they can corrode transport vehicles and other cargo and may also pose safety hazards. Law enforcement authorities remind that the transport of corrosive substances must comply with strict packaging and declaration requirements. Wet storage batteries that have not passed the relevant tests must be handled in accordance with the regulations for the transport of dangerous goods, and false or concealed declarations are strictly prohibited.
